President Muhammadu Buhari has thanked Nigerians for re-electing him to steer the affairs of the country for another four years.
A joyous Buhari expressed his gratitude to the Nigerian electorate in his victory speech minutes after he was declared winner of the 2019 presidential election on Wednesday by Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Yakubu, the Chief Returning Officer for the election, declared President Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of Saturday’s election, having polled 15,191,847 votes- being the highest number of votes- and satisfied the requirements of the law.
In his victory speech read at the APC presidential campaign office in Abuja, the president-elect thanked Nigerians for coming out en masse to perform their civic duty, saying he was humbled by the mandate given to him by the electorate to continue with his programmes.
“I thank the millions of Nigerians who voted to re-elect me as your president for the next four years. I am deeply humbled and profoundly grateful to you for judging me worthy of continuing to serve you and for your peaceful conduct.,” he said.
The president thanked Yemi Osinbanjo, the Vice President-elect; Bola Ahmed Tinubu; Co-chairman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council; Adams Oshiomhole, APC National Chairman; Rotimi Amaechi; Director-General, APC Presidential Campaign Council, and all members and volunteers of the ruling party nationwide who contributed towards his re-election.
President Buhari lamented the loss of lives during the election, noting that it was regrettable.
He thanked the security agencies for ensuring that the election went on largely peaceful across the country, as well as both the domestic and international observers for their vigilance over the electoral process.
He said those resposnbile for the spate of violence that occured during the election would be brought to justice by the law enforcment agencies.
The president-elected reiterated his administration’s pledge to continue its three-pronged effort of fighting corruption, improving the economy and providing a secured environment for all persons living in Nigeria, as well as being an inclusive government for all.
He said: “The new Administration will intensify its efforts in Security, Restructuring the Economy and Fighting Corruption. We have laid down the foundation and we are committed to seeing matters to the end.
“We will strive to strengthen our unity and inclusiveness so that no section or group will feel left behind or left out.”
He also appealed to his supporters to be maganminous in victory and not to taunt the opposition for losing the election.
“I will like to make a special appeal to my supporters not to gloat or humiliate the opposition. Victory is enough reward for your efforts,” President Buhari said.
