Simi attacks Festus Keyamo over social media bill

Singer Simisola has engaged the minister of state for Labour and Employment Festus Keyamo, over his post and approval of the social media Bill. The artiste who’s the wife of another singer Adekunle Gold, didn’t spare the senior advocate of Nigeria ,saying there are more pressing issues than discussing social media bill  on the floor of the national assembly.

The social media bill since it was introduced by the parliament caused a lot of chaos on the internet. The bill seeks to regulate social media and prevent the spread of fake news and Nigerians had mixed feelings about it.

The lawyer who happens to be a Senior Advocate of Nigeria took to his Twitter page to share his views on the topic. He urged Nigeria not to be so against the bill and advised them to direct their agitation to the parliament. He also advised citizens to pressure the Parliament to “clearly define the types of false and insensitive posts that would attract penal consequences so that govt doesn’t abuse it.

The real agitation should be for Parliament, in line with S.36(12) of the 1999 Constitution, to clearly define the TYPES of false & insensitive posts that would attract penal consequences, so that govt doesn’t abuse it. But to leave everyone to just post ANYTHING is unacceptable

However, Simi who happens to have a different view questioned the lawyer to state the fake news about the government which warranted them to pass such a bill.  Simi feels the need for the bill is unnecessary as they are more pressuring issues in the country.

She said  In a democracy sir, it should NOT be the law for people to be ‘sensitive’ when they talk about the people they voted for. How many false posts about the government actually circulate that warrants a bill like this? We have way more pressing issues in Nigeria and even YOU know it!
