Real Madrid winger, Gareth Bale, has reportedly told his teammates he is prepared to stay and play golf if the club don’t pay off the outstanding €51 million remaining on his contract.
Bale was left on the bench by coach Zinedine Zidane for the entire game against Real Betis on Sunday, in the last fixture of the season, and in what could be his farewell match for the club.
Real were humbled 2-0 in front of the Bernabeu fans.
Radioestadio, quoted by Sportbible reports that the player allegedly told his teammates after the game in the dressing room, that he would leave the club once he is paid the outstanding on his remaining three-year deal.
“I’ve got three years left on my contract. If they want me to go, they’ll need to pay me €17m per season. If not, I’ll stay here. And if I have to play golf, I will,” he was quoted as saying.
Bale is said to be a lover of golf, so much so that Thibaut Cortois refer to him as “The Golfer” in an interview in February.
When asked about the Bale situation at the club after the game, Zidane was frank in his comment.
“He [Bale] has won a lot here but we live for the present and the future,” Zidane said.
“We will not forget the past but we have to live for day the day to day.
“I have counted on other players in more in recent weeks, and if I had a fourth substitute today I would not have brought him on.
“I make these decisions when it is right to do so, and I must act in the best interests of the team at all times.”
