Luka Modric Ends Messi, Ronaldo Dominance, Wins Ballon d'Or 2018

Luka Modric has been named the winner of 2018’s Ballon d’Or, bringing an end to the decade-long stranglehold of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Real Madrid playmaker beat off competition from Ronaldo, Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Messi to scoop the award at a ceremony in Paris Monday night.

He played a pivotal role for his club as Madrid stormed to a third consecutive Champions League title, as well as captaining Croatia to second place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The ballon d’Or award completes a stellar year for the diminutive midfielder after he was awarded the Golden Ball at the World Cup, in addition to picking up the Fifa Best Award in September.

Modric 33, finished ahead of his former Madrid team-mate Ronaldo in the vote, making the Portuguese superstar settle for second place for the first time in three years.

France star Griezmann took third place in the poll, with fellow World Cup winner Mbappe close behind in fourth.

Barcelona talisman Messi, meanwhile, dropped outside the top two for the first time in 11 years and came in fifth this time after a disappointing World Cup with Argentina.
