Liverpool were crowned UEFA Super Cup champions after they defeated Chelsea 5-4 on penalties in a thrilling encounter in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday.
The game went into penalties after 120 minutes of football ended 2-2, with Sadio Mane scoring Liverpool’s two goals while Olivier Giroud and Jorginho were on target for Chelsea.
Liverpool have now won the UEFA Super Cup four times (1977, 2001, 2005, 2019), the most by any English team.
For Chelsea, winners of the Super Cup in 1998, it is their third straight defeat, after losing in 2012 and 2013.
The game saw French female referee, Stephanie Frappart, become the first woman to officiate in a major men’s European match.
After bossing possession in most part of the first half, Chelsea deservedly went 1-0 up in the 36th minute through Giroud who slipped a low finish under Liverpool substitute keeper Adrian, following a pass from Christian Pulisic.
Liverpool were back on level terms in the 48th minute thanks to Mane who bundled the ball over the line from a few yards after an initial attempt from Roberto Firmino. There was a quick VAR check but the goal was eventually given.
After both teams failed to find the winner in regulation time, the game was forced into extra-time.
And five minutes into extra-time, Liverpool went 2-1 up as Mane grabbed his second goal with a sidefooted rising finish past Kepa Arizabalaga in goal for Chelsea.
Chelsea refused to give up and were rewarded for their effort as they equalised on 101 minutes through Jorginho from the penalty spot, after Adrian fouled Tammy Abraham.
The game went into penalties with Liverpool converting all their five kicks while Abraham’s attempt was saved by Adrian.
