Exclusive: What Is Bad Is Bad - Danny Young Speaks On Copyright Issue With Tiwa Savage

Music star, Danny Young was at Hiphop World Magazine recently to discuss his lingering copyright issue with Mavin Record's first lady, Tiwa Savage over her track 'One'. Danny Young claimed Tiwa took lines from his earlier track "Oju Ti Tiwon" and as such his intellectual rights should be protected.

Danny Young opened up on this issue and many more during a question and answer session with us, read along.

It’s nice having you here, how has it been?
It’s been a great year, it’s a starting of a new year so we hope for better things this year.

You seem to have spent a lot of years in the industry over time and at a point we haven’t been seeing much of DannyYoung, what have you been doing at that time?

there was a time whereby I was really not dropping music often like I used to do, and reason is that like you said I’ve been in the industry for a very long time and there’s nobody in the game like from our big brothers like from 2face to everybody, who didn’t have a time when they need to calm down and reflect, rebrand and face other things… So basically, I have so many things I do. Like I always say, I am not just an artiste, I am a business man, so sometimes I just wanna reflect and handle some other things… I’m a jack of all trade, the most important thing is make money.

Recently you had an issue with Tiwa Savage sprouting from a song, can you tell us about it?

I didn’t go haywire, I only tried to talk about what is bad, let’s call a spade a spade. We are in an industry where we don’t take cognizance of the right things, cause we feel we are all one; we are all one but it is wrong, I cannot come to your house without taking permission from you or taking keys from you and go into your pot of soup and steal meat and tell me we are the same.

You’ll first ask me what I’m doing in your house without your consent. It is not professional for us to use our content without proper approval, there’s nothing bad in anybody using anybody’s content, it’s part of the business but when you don’t seek consent its bad.

Fela is a legend he isn’t living anymore but he’s songs are still very much active among youths. So many artiste pick content from Fela but I don’t know if they seek consent from his family, Fela may be dead but he’s got responsibilities because he’s got family. That’s why he gave music when he was alive, so it doesn’t mean because he’s no more anybody should abuse it. I feel we need to structuralize these things, at least for the up and coming artiste. Music is fast growing and we have more people coming into music.

The video has been brought down by Youtube, do you have anything to do with it?

When it happened I made my complaint known and they ignored me, I got bashed on social media why because I was talking to Aunty Tiwa our Queen.  So they felt she can never do nothing wrong, but I believe no one is above the law. So I decided to take actions and do the right thing, then the right result came out.

It’s a new year, can you let your fans know what to expect from you this year?

I’ve got a new single out titled ‘money in Paris”  it’s a jam trust me. This is the first song I’m dropping this year and I also have a concert coming up in the month of April in Ondo State, I’m from Ondo State so I’m bringing the whole industry down to Ondo State, to celebrate our culture our heritage. Big things around this year.

Can you say something about Nigeria’s political system?

In the last dispensation everybody started craving for change and the change came and still we aren’t satisfied with the present change which is our economic situation.

The youth and everybody is talking about let the youth rule, it’s not a bad thing. But I don’t think it’s all about the youth, it could be the youth or elderly person it doesn’t really matter what’s important is someone who has the interest of the masses at heart and will bring a significant change in the country. Let’s vote wisely and not be sentimental or judgmental, we should vote someone who is capable.
