Struggling Girona Stun Real Madrid At Home

Real Madrid’s La Liga title hopes was dealt a huge blow following their shock 2-1 home loss to struggling Girona on Sunday.

 

Casemiro had put Madrid 1-0 in the 25th minute before Cristian Stuani drew Girona level from the penalty spot 40 minutes later.

And with 15 minutes remaining, Girona went in front thanks to Portu.

In the 90th minute Madrid skipper, Sergio Ramos was sent off, making him the first player in the history of La Liga to receive 20 red cards. It was his 25th across all competitions for Real Madrid.

Madrid remain third on 45 points, nine points behind league leaders Barcelona, while Girona are 15th on 27 points.

Prior to Sunday’s game, Madrid were unbeaten in eight games in all competitions (seven wins, one draw). Their last defeat came on January 19, when they were beaten 1-0 by Leganes.

For Girona, the last time they won a league game was on November 25, 2018 when they beat Espanyol 3-1.

They had lost their last six games in all competitions before the game away to Madrid.
