Russian Goalkeeper Receives AK-47 As Man-of-the-match Award

A Russian ice-hockey goalkeeper, Saveli Kononov, has received an AK-47 for helping his team win a game in the National Hockey League (NHL), on Friday.

Kononov was awarded the assault rifle by the captain of his team, after he was voted player of the match by his team-mates.

He put in an extra-ordinary performance to help Izhstal Izhevsk to a 3-2 victory over rivals, Chelmet, saving 36 shots on goal.

The NHL is well known for their bizarre traditions of awarding their best performers with bizzare gifts.
The Carolina Hurricanes had presented their own star performer with an axe, while the New York Rangers present a ‘Broadway Hat’.

However, the Russian side took it to a whole new level, presenting their best performer with a gun.

The team even posted a video of the presentation on their social media handles, where Kononov was seen receiving the award from his captain, after an official had brought the weapon into the dressing room.
