Manchester United pulled one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the UEFA Champions League as they beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 away in Wednesday’s second leg round of 16 clash to qualify for the quarter-finals.
The tie ended 3-3 on aggregate but United went through on away goals despite losing the first leg 2-0.
A brace from Romelu Lukaku and a late penalty from Marcus Rashford, saw United become the first team in Champions League history to progress to the next round having lost by two or more goals at home in the first leg of a knockout match.
Juan Bernat got PSG’s goal.
United got off to the perfect start as they took the lead in the second minutes, through Lukaku who pounced on a poor back pass from Thilo Kehrer, rounded veteran keeper Gianluigi Buffon, before slotting into an empty net.
PSG equalised in the 12th minute off Bernat who simply tapped into an empty net from Kylian Mbappe’s cross.
United were back in front thanks to Lukaku who was quickest to a rebound from Buffon, after the Italian spilled Rashford’s shot from outside the box, and slammed the ball into the net.
With time running out, United interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer threw in youngsters, Tahith Chong and Mason Greenwood.
In the 91st minute, United were awarded a late penalty which was converted by Rashford, after Presnel Kimpembe was judged to have used his arm to stop Diogo Dalot’s goalbound shot.
And in the other round of 16 game also played on Wednesday, FC Porto beat AS Roma 3-1 after extra-time.
The two-time Champions League winners went through 4-3 on aggregate after losing the first leg 2-1.
