INEC Declares APC’s David Lyon Winner Of Bayelsa Guber Election

David Lyon, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been declared as winner of the 2019 Bayelsa State governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

 

Lyon defeated 44 other candidates in the election, which held across the state on Saturday.

Professor Faraday Orumwense, the Returning Officer of the election, declared Lyon as winner of the election on Monday at 01:01am.

According to the result declared by Orumwense, who is also the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Lyon polled a total number of 352,552 votes, while his closest rival, Senator Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 143,172 votes.

The APC governorship candidate, therefore, recorded a wide margin of 209,380 votes against his PDP opponent.

“That Lyon David Perewonrimi of APC, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” Orumwense announced at the INEC state headquarters in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, which served as the central collation centre for the election.

The Returning Officer announced that the total number of votes cast was 505,884, with the total number of valid votes put at 499,551.

The total number of rejected votes as announced by Orumwense was 6,333.

A look at the declared result shows that Lyon won in six out of the eight Local Government Areas in the state, while Diri won two LGAs.

Lyon won in Brass, Nembe, Ogbia, Yenagoa, Southern Ijaw and Ekeremor LGAs, while Diri claimed victory in Kolokuma-Opokuma and Sagbama LGAs.
