Key Manchester United players, David de Gea, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, will consider their future if the club fails to qualify for Champions League next season, a report has said.
Following the 4-0 drubbing by Everton on Sunday in the Premier League, United are now left with an uphill battle to secure a place in the top four this season.
The Guardian reports that the three players could tell United they want to play football elsewhere should the three-time winners miss out on Europe’s premier club competition.
The club have also told the players they would have 25 per cent of their earnings slashed if they fail to ensure that the club finish among the top four teams in England.
De Gea’s contract expires at the end of the season, though United would trigger the option to extend by a year. The Spanish number one has been locked in extension battle with the club for almost a year, insisting on same salary as Alexis Sanchez, who earns almost $500, 000 per-week.
Pogba remains a target for Real Madrid, and has openly admitted it would be a “dream” for him to play under Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.
Reports say he is on top of Zidane’s shopping list this summer alongside Eden Hazard.
Solskjaer has warned his players that they could be left out of the team if they don’t improve after their humiliation at Goodison Park over the weekend.
“I’m going to be successful here and there are players there who will not be part of that successful team,” Solskjaer said.
“Many of them do have it. We have to stick together as a team. We can’t change the whole squad – it’s got to be one step at a time.”
His comments had been interpreted as an overhaul during this summer. The former Molde coach was also said to have met with his assistant, Mike Phelan, on Monday, to discuss transfer plans.
