Chelsea lost the final of the Carabao Cup final to Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday, after a penalty shootout.
With the game at 0-0 after extra time and heading for spot kicks, Chelsea goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, refused to be substituted by under fire manager, Maurizio Sarri.
The £71million Spanish keeper; the club’s record signing, was evidently struggling with cramp in the closing stages of the 120 minutes.
The Italian had decided to bring on Willy Caballero, who saved three penalties in a shootout to help Manchester City win the trophy against Liverpool in 2016.
Arrizabalaga refused to come off, leaving Sarri in a touchline rage. His misery was completed as City won the shootout 4-3, with Raheem Sterling scoring the winning penalty.
Ilkay Gundogan, Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva scored from the spot for City, though Arrizabalaga saved Leroy Sane’s penalty, but it was to no avail.
City keeper, Ederson, had saved Jorginho’s spot kick and David Luiz hit the post, despite Cesar Azplicueta, Emerson and Eden Hazard converting their kicks.
The Cityzens claimed the first major trophy in their quadruple assault on silverware this season.
City retained the trophy, but Arrizabalaga’s insubordination will certainly be the headline story.
