Ten-man Brazil emerged champions of this year’s Copa America on home soil after beating Peru 3-1 in Sunday’s final.
Gremio’s Everton Soares, Gabriel Jesus of Manchester City and Everton’s Richarlison, were all on target for Brazil while Jose Paolo Guerrero got Peru’s goal.
It was Brazil’s ninth Copa America title after last winning the tournament in 2007, and as hosts in 1989.
For Peru, the last time they were crowned Copa America champions was in 1975.
Brazil took the lead in the 15th minute through Gremio star Everton who slotted home from six yards following an inch-perfect ball to the far post from Jesus.
Peru were back on level terms thanks to Jose Paolo Guerrero who converted from the penalty spot following confirmation from VAR after a handball by Thiago Silva.
Guerrero’s goal was the first Brazil keeper Alisson Becker had conceded for over two months.
Brazil retook the lead on the stroke of half-time as Jesus clinically slotted the ball into the bottom left corner after he was picked out by Artur.
With 20 minutes remaining in the game, Brazil were reduced to 10 men as Jesus was sent off for his second yellow card of the game.
But in the 89th minute, it was Brazil who scored as they went 3-1 ahead thanks to Richarlison who scored from the penalty spot after Everton, who went on a mazy run, was shoulder barged in the box.
Once again the referee had to consult with VAR before awarding the penalty.
