Mavin Records youngstar, Rema talks about his journey to stardom, how he met Don Jazzy, what inspires his kind of music and more in this exclusive chat with Hiphop World Magazine, read along.
How did you got signed to Mavin Record?
I will say it was a remarkable incident, I did a freestyle to the Prince Gucci Gang song, we made a remake of the beat and he jumped on it because he liked it and called me over to Lagos and introduced me to Don Jazzy and the rest of the team.
What inspires your kind of music?
I will say it’s from way back growing up, my personality, my background, church, school, playing at live bands going for events, working more trying to teach and influence other people musically. All the experience from over the years build up and also advice from Jazzy, Prince, producer and trying to stick with the sound that I’m trying to put out there and also listening to music.
Why did you chose Afro beat over trap?
Yeah, I actually dropped a freestyle few days ago, trap freestyle, purely trap. My first EP was more of Afro beat, I had ‘Iron man’ ‘corny’ ‘dumebi’ and also a trap song called ‘why.’
Do you intend doing both Afro beat and trap?
I will be doing more than trap and afro beat, I’ll be doing more different sounds. As time goes by, the sound gets better. More sounds unlocked, so get ready.
