Messi Wins Barcelona’s Best Ever Goal Award

Lionel Messi’s goal in a Copa del Rey game against Getafe in the 2006/2007 season has been voted the best ever in the history of Barcelona.

The goal was picked ahead of 63 other goals in a competition that started at the end of December 2018, and had more than 500,000 votes cast in the past three months.

After 60 eliminatory rounds, four goals – three from Messi and one from Sergi Roberto – made it to the final stage.

Among the four goals selected, Messi’s goal against Getafe got 45% of the total votes, beating his efforts against Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey final of 2014/2015 season(28%) and against Real Madrid in the Bernabéu in the 2010/2011 Champions League (16%). Roberto’s late winner against PSG received 11%. In the final vote, users from more than 160 countries participated.

Messi’s goal could be likened to the one scored by Diego Maradona at the Mexico 1986 FIFA World Cup.

After receiving the ball in Barcelona’s own half of the pitch, Messi went on a solo run, beating four players, rounded the keeper before slotting the ball into the net. Barcelona won the game 5-2.
