Int’l Friendly: Ukraine Force Eagles To 2-2 Draw

The Super Eagles of Nigeria surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 against Ukraine, in an international friendly match on Tuesday in Dnipro, Ukraine.

Debutant and Glasgow Rangers midfielder, Joe Aribo and Lille’s Victor Osimhen, gave the Eagles a deserved 2-0 lead in the first half.

But two quick goals with less than 15 minutes remaining in the game, from Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko and substitute, Roman Yaremchuk, saw both teams settle for a draw.

It was the first time ever that the Eagles will face Ukraine at senior men’s level, with previous meetings between both countries coming at the U-20 World Cup in 2005 and 2019.

The Eagles got off to the perfect start in the third minute, thanks to Aribo who poked home Alex Iwobi’s low cross from the left.

In the 34th minute, the Eagles doubled their lead as Osimhen converted from the penalty spot after Samuel Kalu was fouled inside the box.

Ukraine fought back and reduced the deficit on 78 minutes off a wonderful strike from Zinchenko, who beat his marker inside the box before squeezing his shot into a tight angle which ended inside the net.

And just two minutes later after Zinchenko’s goal, Ukraine equalised as Yaremchuk ran onto a pass and hit a low left foot strike, which hit the on rushing Francis Uzoho before it came off his arm and into the net.

The game saw Club Brugge forward, Emmanuel Dennis and Bordeaux’s Josh Maja, make their debuts for the Eagles.

Up next for the Eagles is a home clash against Benin Republic for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, on 11 November, 2019.
