Enrique Cerezo, Atletico Madrid president, has revealed that Diego Simeone, coach of the team was “disappointed” over Griezmann’s decision to leave the club this summer.
Griezmann announced on Tuesday, that he would be leaving the Wanda Metropolitano, despite signing a five-year contract extension last season.
The French World Cup winner has been linked with a move to Barcelona, whom he had reportedly agreed to join last season before the deal failed.
The 28-year-old reportedly held a meeting with Simeone and chief executive, Miguel Angel Gil Marin, on Tuesday, to inform them of his decision.
“Simeone is disappointed, like the others,” Cerezo told COPE’s ‘El Partidazo’ radio show.
“He was determined to leave and there was no chance of convincing him.
“I don’t know or care [who Griezmann’s next team will be]. But when a team wants to pay a release clause, it’s normal to communicate and we haven’t received any messages from anyone just yet.
“Wherever he goes, I hope that he is treated the same as he was here… and good luck!”
Apart from Griezmann, the club is facing a number of big-name exits this season.
Lucas Hernandez has agreed to join Bayern Munich, while influencial club captain, Diego Godin, had earlier announced he would be leaving the Madrid club.
